In this program of twentieth century music District5 connected the biographies of four composers whose lives were marked by the experience of exile.  Though unified in their expatriation, each composer’s circumstances and reactions varied dramatically.  From Paul Hindemith’s voluntary departure from Nazi Germany to Isang Yun’s multiple imprisonments, this concert presented exile with all its contradictions and complications.

JAMIE BARTON, MEZZO-SOPRANO RECITAL | THE BARNS AT WOLF TRAP

District5 accompanied award-winning mezzo-soprano, Jamie Barton, at the end of her recital in a performance of Lee Hoiby's Bon Appétit! Bon Appétit! is a delightful one-act chamber opera depicting a Julia Child television episode, in which Julia Child prepares "Le Gateau au Chocolate l'Eminence Brune." Jamie Barton actually baked a chocolate cake on stage during the performance!

"Thinking Big by Thinking Small: how to improve large ensemble performance through chamber music principles"

 

Following a brief Carter quartet performance, District5 presented their large enesmble workshop with the UMBC wind ensemble. The presentatino focused on using chamber music skills to help rehearse an unconducted wind ensemble piece.

District5 presented our latest 30-minute show to the music students of Riverdale Park's high school. Performance was followed by a discussion on new music, performing from memory, and the seemingly endless capabilities of chamber musicians.

This was a concert that District5 had dreamed of doing since we arrived at UMD. An incredible cast of 17 musicians came together to bring Schoenberg's powerful chamber orchestra arrangement of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde to life! This was our last performance at the University of Maryland as the Fellowship Wind Quintet.

SAVVY MUSICIAN CHAMBER COMPETITION/CONFERENCE

June 2-7, 2015.

District5 competed as 1 of 4 finalists in the Savvy Musician's innovative chamber competition, performing our {dis}integration program. We then stayed and participated in a 4-day invigorating arts entrepreneruship retreat. We left South Carolina with many new friends and countless new ideas!
